Sleeping Tips for Hostels

In 2017 I was fortunate enough to take some time off of work and had the opportunity to travel around Asia jumping from hostel to hostel. After meeting some very interesting people along the way you pick up many tips as you go. Its important to get all of these items before you depart because you  never know where you will be able to find these items along the way.

Eye Mask

You may look ridiculous wearing it but an eye mask is no joke. When I originally left for my trip I told my family I didn’t need one but thank the lord my mother slipped it into my bag anyways. I had countless hours sleeping on planes, cars and other modes of transportation.  My friends also had countless pictures of me sleeping and drooling on myself with it on. Thats how you know you’re getting great sleep.

Ear plugs

I personally never used ear plugs on my trip but I know so many people who did. They swore by it. There could have been a fire alarm or a dog barking at them from the foot of their bed and they would have slept like a rock right through it.

Neck Pillow

I’m sure you’ve seen it sold in every airport and you’re so jealous of all the people more prepared than you who already have theirs on and couldn’t be happier. This isn’t something you should go with the cheaper option. I went with the most luxurious one I could find and I couldn’t have been happier. I wore it everywhere. You get what you pay for when it comes to these neck pillows. Go for durability and one you feel can last you forever. If you are lucky find yourself one with a little cell phone pocket on the side so you can have easy access if you have to change your music or check something in full comfort mode.

Lock

A lock is something that isn’t normally the first thing you think of when you’re looking for items for sleep. When you leave your bag in a hostel there is ample amount of time for a thief to come in and rummage through your things. A simple lock may be enough to deter the thief so he hopefully just moves to the next bag. Give yourself the piece of mind with a cheap purchase that should reduce your stress which will in turn help you sleep more securely. I found that utilizing the attachment that is pictured below was really helpful for helping out a friend in need so we could both lock our bags to the bedframe while we left. Make sure to think about all of your friends who will be far less prepared than you.

Noise Cancelling Headphones

How many times have you been on a flight and thought to yourself. I paid way too much money to be on this flight next to this crying baby the whole time. I have. Sometimes there is nothing you can do about it. If you do find yourself sitting near a crying baby on a long flight it is such a wonderful thing to be able to pull out your noise cancelling headphones. Pop these guys in your ears and fall into a deep sleep while everyone around sinks into depression around you.
