You may be wondering:
How do I decide between Tuft and Needle and Casper?
The best way to compare mattresses is to stack them up side by side.
We formulated a series of tests to determine what we think will give you the best night sleep.
Tuft and Needle and Casper are both great beds, Which one is for you?
This may seem crazy but:
The difference in firmness between the two mattresses is hardly noticeable.
-The Casper mattress feels like it is gripping you and fully encompassing you.
-The Tuft and Needle feels like you are more on top of the mattress.
It is difficult to notice the real difference.
We asked five people to help us with a blind test to determine the firmness between the two.
Here are their comments organized into this easy to read chart.
In the end three out of five people agreed that the they preferred the Casper’s firmness over the Tuft and Needle.
|Firmness Pros||Firmness Cons|
|Casper||Supportive foam that will not allow you to sink into your mattress too much. |
|Some side sleepers do not like it at first.
Can be tough on the shoulder at first.
|Tuft & Needle||So firm you're completely on top of the mattress and will never overheat.|
Great for sleeping on your back and an optimal healthy back position.
|Very tough on shoulder for side sleepers.
Casper and Tuft & Needle are both good beds for dealing with lower back pain.
It is best to stick with a firmer foam mattress when picking a mattress and both of these fall into that category.
The Casper Mattress is built with four layers of different types of foam.
These are listed from top to bottom:
The Open Cell Foam – Proprietary foam that keeps you from overheating and can add some bounciness to the mattress.
Responsive Memory Foam – This is the foam that allows that perfect amount of sinking into the foam.
Adaptive Transition Foam – This layer works in tandem with responsive foam and is a bit sturdier to help with weigh distribution.
Durable Support Foam – This is the strongest foam in the mattress. Built for durability and long lasting stability.
The Tuft & Needle mattress is built with only two different layers of foam.
They believe that it’s not about having more layers just so they can charge more. They made highest value mattress and passed the savings onto the customers.
Here are the two layers from the top down:
T&N Adaptive Foam – This layer is their proprietary foam that they use for everything. They swear by this foam and see no other reason to add other layers that do not benefit the mattress.
Supportive Foam – This layer is to built as a sturdy base. Provides a great foundation for the first layer.
Both mattresses have a similar feel but what is very clear is the difference in material.
The outer most layers of the Casper is a clear winner with its higher quality cover.
A lot of people do not notice these features because your mattress will be covered in sheets but the Casper’s cover is a nice touch. You can easily fall asleep on it without sheets if you chose to do so.
The Tuft & Needle’s feel is fantastic. The cover is made from rayon polyester. This material is very soft and provides you with all you will need for extreme comfort.
Both of the companies cover’s on the mattresses are not removable. This may be an issue if you spill something but overall it is
The price of these two mattresses are significantly different.
We find that a lot of people don’t notice a huge difference between these two mattresses so if the price of the mattress is important to you than you should most definitely stick to the Tuft and Needle.

Customer Service and Return Policy
Both companies utilize a very similar return policy. At this current time there is not much of a difference when it comes to this category. Both companies allow you to return the mattress up to 100 days and have excellent customer service.

Pillows and Sheets
In this next section we will break down some of the best side accessories each company has to offer.
We used the Casper Pillow to sleep on for multiple nights and we became huge fans.
At first glance it looks as if the pillow is quite thick. I really thought the thickness would be an issue.
Turns out that the pillow ended up being one of most enjoyable pillows I had the opportunity to sleep on.
The inner core of the pillow made all of the difference. Its springy center formed the perfect amount of pressure resistance against my head.
I used the Casper Sheets for one night.
Before getting into the bed I did a little bit of research about what these wonderful sheets were made of.
These sheets are made from a special kind of cotton called Supima Cotton. It is grown only in California and is a genetically superior form of regular cotton due to its length.
A lot of the time cotton tends to fray and you can simply tell they are not brand new sheets.
These sheets were put through multiple washes before ever making it onto my bed.
I’m happy to say that the sheets held up and did not have any loose string popping out after three washes. These sheets worked great and would definitely recommend them to anyone who was interested in purchasing Casper Sheets.
Tuft & Needle
We used the Tuft & Needle Pillow for a couple of nights and found that their patented adaptive foam technology built into the pillow really tipped the scale towards Tuft & Needle.
When it came to determining which pillow was best there was a clear winner for us. This was the Tuft & Needle.
This was a very difficult decision but as a side sleeper I found that the distance that my head sunk into the pillow was slightly more perfect than the Casper pillow.
Tuft & Needle Sheets
The night after I tried the Casper sheets I had the opportunity to try the Tuft & Needle Sheets.
These sheets too were made from Supima Cotton.
At the end of the day it was very difficult to actually tell the difference between the two. They are both made from the same material that is grown in the same area of the United States.
I would be doing my readers an injustice if I was to tell you that one of these sheets is better than the other.
I personally would stick with the cheaper option.
Bedframes for both!
If you are interested in checking out some bed frames that would work here is an article we wrote about the best bed frames for casper.
What do the showrooms look like?
Casper Showrooms are quite beautiful. Here is a photo from one of their first showrooms.
They are currently located in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
If you are close by make sure to stop by and lay on one of these great mattresses.
Tuft and Needle has a very similar setup for their showroom.
They went with a much simpler look for their store.
As you can tell by this photo they are really driving the whole focus of the architecture in the room around the bed and mattress.
It seems there are a bit more distractions at the Casper store.
Casper Wave vs Tuft & Needle Mint
This next section will break down the differences between these two luxury mattresses.
The Casper wave is Casper’s luxury brand of mattresses. The Casper wave was designed specifically for the body.
Majority of mattresses simply have layer after layer of foam with no design built into the foam. This even includes the regular casper mattress.
The Wave is simply a casper mattress with one more special layer of foam on top of the mattress and foam cut out of the mattress and very specific areas.
The foam that is removed in specific locations to alleviate pressure off of the shoulders. That seems the be the largest complaint about people who use any kind of foam mattress.
One of the designers of the mattress has described it as sleeping on a cloud.
Tuft & Needle Mint
Tuft and Needle just released a new Mattress that now has a black cover called the Tuft and Needle Mint. This Black cover catches the eye very nicely.
The only thing that scares us about this is that you can’t tell how dirty the Mattress truly is.
We are excited to see how well these are received in the marketplace. After getting our hands on one of the first models possible the feel is different than the standard tuft and needle. The cover seems to be higher quality than the original and has a softer feel.
Some have claimed that Casper’s marketing is on the verge of being scammy.
One of them is attached to their site.
Their Social Media presence is quite amusing and entertaining. On twitter they will likely respond to you with funny quips. like this one.
— Casper (@Casper) August 24, 2016
They made a massive leap forward by purchasing Sleepopolis. At the time Sleepopolis was the largest mattress reviewing website.
By purchasing Sleepopolis they bought themselves the top spot in all web traffic when searching for a mattress. You can easily see this by searching Best Mattress … anything.
Is this tactic genius or scammy?
By reading this you now have the opportunity decide with your purchase whether you think it is scammy or not.
Tuft & Needle’s tactics are a lot less aggressive compared to Casper. Tuft & Needle credited their $100 million in sales to google ad words.
The difference between these two is the difference between organic traffic and paid traffic. When you search something on google for the most part a lot of people tend to skip over the ads.
But here’s the kicker:
What if the ads were in the organic traffic?
This is the difference between what Casper and Tuft & Needle are doing. By owning Sleepopolis they can make sure that Casper is always in the top spot when it comes to mattresses.
If another mattress company came along tomorrow it would be very difficult to dethrone casper.
If Casper felt threatened, a 500 word post could be published by them and be in the top results and absolutely ruin the mattress companies sales.
Is this a dangerous monopoly? That is for you to decide.
Casper and Tuft & Needle in the News
Most recent business decisions by Casper have come to public media attention and it seems that they are showing a lot of interest into expanding into international markets. The next country on their list is Canada.
Tuft & Needle
Tuft & Needle has sold their startup’s first headquarters for $9 million. This was part of their expansion plan because they have moved to much larger facilities. Their company has been a wild success and their is a lot more to come from them.
Do I need a Foundation for my Casper and Tuft and Needle Mattress?
Although it is very nice to sleep at an increased height we found that it is not worth it generally to purchase one of these. The Mattresses will most likely feel the same as they did for you whether you are on top of a foundation or simply on the wooden slats of your bed. If you are still interested in finding a good one Casper has created one that people talk a lot about in reviews.
Is Casper an air mattress?
No, Casper is not an Air Mattress. It is a foam mattress. See the What’s Inside section for more details on everything inside of the Casper Mattress.

Is Tuft & Needle worth it?
In our opinion a Tuft & Needle mattress may be the most worth it mattress that you can find anywhere. The value you are getting is unlike any other mattress. They are passing on all of the savings from production onto the customers. We think that Tuft & Needle may overtake Casper one day in market share due to their highly competitive pricing.
Are Casper Mattress and Tuft & Needle good for side sleepers?
Both mattresses were designed with the side sleeper in mind. Both of these mattresses can be tough on the shoulder at first.
If you are very concerned that you will not be comfortable on it than I highly suggest checking out the luxury mattresses that both companies offer. The Casper Wave and the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress.
Both of these have done extra due diligence for the side sleeper. The Casper Wave has removed small amounts of foam in areas where there are high amounts of pressure to ensure that this is not an issue.
